An 18-year-old from west Texas was named the proud owner of the grand champion steer on Friday at the Fort Worth Stock Show, and his victory completes quite a family legacy.
Flint Newman gave up a lot of sleep, along with playing football, to raise his steer.
“A lot of work every day,” he said. “You don’t have time to do anything else. Just go to the barn and that’s what you do.”
But it all paid off when he and his calf, Here I Am, faced the judge.
“And he walked up to my calf and then he walked down to the end of the line down there, and I thought, ‘Uh oh,'” said Flint. ‘And he came back and he slapped mine, and I was just happy.”
Newman’s sister helped explain the steer’s name.
“Anytime you stop him, he’s just all perky and cocky,” she said. “Like he knows he’s a show calf, and it’s like he’s saying, ‘Here I am! Check me out!'”
But the Newman family member who was perhaps the most excited is the one who knows firsthand just how difficult winning is – Kody Newman, Flint’s aunt.
Kody’s calf E.T. won grand champion steer at the Fort Worth Stock Show in 1984, and her payoff was $45,000.
She went on to raise two more grand champions in San Antonio and Houston, all at the age of 14.
Flint will see the financial payoff for his hard work, which he says he’ll use for college.
Saturday’s auction is certain to bring him a six-figure sale.
Last year’s steer went for $205,000.
Flint is no stranger to the process of showing a steer – he won second place in last year’s Grand Champion competition.
